A country’s viability is a function
of her economy and for her economy to determine this viability; it must be
successful in the business and its expansion. This can be achieved through a
stable environment- ensuring the safety of the employees and facilities safety.
Health is the total physical,
emotional and mental state of an individual and not just mere absence of
diseases which individuals, schools, facilities, banks, industries and
companies need to attain sustainable development.
The environment is the air, land,
water on which people, animals and plants live. It include our context, our
working environment, machines and equipment, facilities and activities, all of
which must be maintained in an healthful and safe state if they must sustain
life, living and planned objectives as expected.
Safety is a state in which one is
free from accident, danger or situations that can cause harms, injuries,
fatalities or death to persons or damage to facilities and equipment. An
environment is labeled unsafe when unsafe acts and practices are allowed to
take over sanity and orderliness.
WHY
MY HEALTH? ITS ENVIRONMENT & ITS SAFETY.
Before the advent of machine, before
18th century, industrial activities and production of goods were manually
done at home. When the invention of machine took over production, men and women
even children were employed to work in these factories in which these factories
in which machines dangerous moving parts, shafts, belts, gears, cutting blades
were exposed without machine guards, ventilation and lightening were generally
poor, these resulted in injuries, ill health, maiming and death of workers. These
conditions remained until engineering modifications.
Waste generatedwere not properly
managed and disposed, pollution of the air, water ways and the general
environment paved wayfor ill-health, environmental pollution and loss of bio
diversities thereby jeopardizing sustainable development.
Oursafety unawareness and
carelessness (unsafe act) can lead to unsafe condition and these conditions
results to accidents, fatalities and sometimes death to persons, damage to the
environment and machines, damage to company’s reputation. All these can lead to
the shutdown of industries and run down economy growth.
Safety is an ubiquitous phenomenon as
it resolves all facts of life which includes:
-Safety on the road
- road safety
-Safety at home - domestic safety
-Industrial safety
-Safety everywhere
If drivers and road users understand
and follow preached principles of road safety, road traffic incidents (RTI)
would be reduced to the ebb.
Lack of safety training and poverty
of the knowledge journey management has resulted to so many fatalities and
death. Accidents don’t just happen; they are caused by road users and drivers.
At home, we sometimes endanger our
environment by improper housekeeping, improper waste disposal and management. According
to the principle of god housekeeping:” A place for everything and everything to
its place”.
When our domestic environment, work
sites and offices are not generally cleaned and orderly arranged – then good
housekeeping is defiled, this can create hazards, collision caused by poorly
arranged materials, over hanging, etc.
But when good housekeeping is
observed,:
-There will be control in
property and facility damage
-Elimination of accidents
and fire causes
-Good standard of living
- Encourages better working
habits
Industrially, safety and zero
accident can be achieved if the principles and practices of industrial safety
and industrial relations are observed.
If we duely follow all safety rules
and principles, accidents and ugly incidence would be reduced to the minimal.
