Keep An Eye On Your Vision GeN 13:14
Good eyesight is an important part of well-being and a significant factor in retaining independence and quality of life. Contrary to popular belief, progressive loss of vision does not need to be an accepted consequence of ageing. However, there are plenty of simple things you can do each day to keep your sight in shape.
A. Eat Right to protect your sight. Eating a diet rich fruits and vegetables, like carrots and particular dark, leafy greens such as spinach, kale,or collard greens is important for keeping your eyes healthy. Research has also shown that there are eye health benefits from eating fish high in omega-3 fatty acids.
B. Maintain a healthy weight. Being over weight or obese increase your risk of developing diabetes and other systematic conditions. These can lead to vision loss, such as diabetic of the eye disease or glaucoma. If you are having trouble maintaing a healthy weight, talk to your doctor.
C. Give your eyes a Break from the computer/phone screen. If you work in front of a computer screen all day,use the 20-20-20 rule to let your eyes rest. Every 20 minutes, look 20 feet away or more for at least 20 seconds. It helps break the eyes constant strain of focusing from dosing close work, like reading or looking at a computer monitor. And,always be sure that you're comfortable arm's distance away from what you're looking at or reading.
Blinking is how we bring fresh tears to the eye surface, which helps your eyes stay moist and free of irritants. But the more we concentrate, whether its on reading or on the computer, the drier our eyes become because we blink about half as many times as we do when we aren't concentrating. This means you must actively engage the 20-20-20 eye rule at such times to maintain healthy eyes and reduce eye strain.
D. Quit smoking Or never start. Smoking is as bad for your eyes as it for the rest of your body. Research has linked smoking to an increased risk of developing age-related macular degeneration, cataract and optic nerve damage, all of which can lead to blindness.
