Is comedy right on the pulpit?

Is comedy right on the pulpit?

There have been hot debates about the rightness of comedy in church. Many Christians consider it a waste of time and wrong use of the pulpit. They believe that God is too ‘serious’ to allow things like comedy to proceed from His ‘throne’ while others consider it as a way through which God can reach out to them; arguing that they have been ‘blessed’ by comedians that ‘ministered’ in their church.

Recently, I conducted an opinion poll among my friends about their view on Comedy in the Church and I got several answers ranging from receptive to the complacent to those who are strongly against saying that the church is not meant for entertainment which is not the purpose of the church. In all, 75% were strongly against it.

Firstly, I will like you to know that the Oxford dictionary defines comedy as a dramatic work that is light and humorous or in satirical tone. From the scripture, we see that there are several means through which God can reach us. Songs, Drama, Dance, Poem or Spoken words have been accepted by a large percentage while comedy still lies on the radar of most denominations.

This post is not going to be polar but I hope to spark some questions in you.

If comedy is not right for the church, would it then be right for a Christian to attend a comedy show? After all, it is not held in the church. I guess that would be hypocritical! Whatever is not acceptable in the church should not be acceptable anywhere else because the presence of God we supposedly come into inside the four walls of a church is also with us in every other place. The temple of God is no longer a physical place, but our bodies. Which means that been humorous is not even permitted in the home. Could that be right?

Now, if comedy is right for the church, how many comedians live their lives like a minister of the gospel to the point where their talks can provoke the anointing of God on the listeners? Most comedy around us today only gets us excited while making a mess of the name of the LORD, His Words and Servants. Any form of talking that does not abide in the context of the scriptures is not acceptable. Comedians claim they got the talent for God. What would be God’s standard for measuring the fruits of the talent. Shows or Lives?
If comedy is not right in the church, is it right anywhere else? If comedy is right in the church, is it blessing lives? What do you think?
